CUT DOWN ON EXCESS GOVERNMENT!

Why does Michigan need a full time legislature? Because it works? Cut it! Why does Michigan have a surgeon general? Because Our current Gov. wanted one? Cut it! Why isn't Michigan a "right to work state"? Is it because those unions are so solid and solvent?, or that the government is so beholden to them and their ilbegotten financial backing? It didn't save Orion, or Truck & Bus or Ford Wixom. Right to not work? Why the heck did I have to replace my one year old license plate with a new design "free of charge"? That probably goes back to my first question. When you've got that many people with nothing to do, someone's going to try come up with some "busy work" to justify their own existence. In all fairness my old-new plate would have clashed with all the new road signs that replaced all the old signs that worked fine all along. Plus we had all that money to burn. And nobody wants to deal with a budget in March or June so you've got to kill some time. We've done fine for years with budget extensions and shut downs so why stop now? No, really. Why? Because THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I can't spend more than I have, so where does the state get off with this "if we spend it they will pay" attitude? Ther're fewer and fewer of us "theys" every day. It seems that each remaining taxpayer gets more and more valuable every day. Maybe it's time to stop treating us as cash cows to be bled dry to feed a bloated entitlement society, and start helping us to grow and maybe fix this mess. The sqeaky wheel gets the grease, it's always been that way. But when the growing numbers of squeaking wheels start steering the train, the engine goes off the tracks! At that point the ride's over, everything stops. The government isn't the engine, the taxpayers are the engine, this government is like a drunken engineer. All aboard! No fare? no problem, no ticket? no sweat, full speed ahead, tax that engine, over tax that engine! Next stop... Blown- Away!

michigan should take a key from the hugely successful disney movie high school movie which had a theme of "were all in this together. now the 2 wealthiest groups in michigan, the 2 groups with the highest ability to pay tax at a time when our state is in duress, pay virtually no tax those groups are/ oil people/ well served by their lobby which by the way the rab 2001-5 exemption is calculated shields far more than michigan oil profit from michigan income tax and in many cases results in no michigan tax for a person who might pay 1 million to the irs retirees/ where in a recent study michigan was ranked first in the nation in providing tax subsidies to retirees/ many is the rich retired couple who pay zero michigan income tax both groups have a large ability to pay/ we are all in this together!

Green Communities Act

Pass a law similar to the Green Communities Act passed Massachusetts earlier this year. A key element of this law is "...it gives residential and commercial owners maximum benefit from the solar and wind power that they install themselves by allowing them to sell excess energy back into the electric grid at a very good rate." We need to think in terms of small scale solar and wind generation at the home or sub-division level. Allowing our big energy companies to maintain their monopoly on energy is 20th century thinking. Fostering new energy sources and efficiency strategies means new technologies, new investments, new companies, and new jobs. Jobs in research, in high-tech engineering, as well as in manufacturing clean energy components, and installing and repairing new technologies. Allowing homeowners to sell excess energy back into the electric grid at a very good rate will shorten the payback period for the return on the investment. At the same time they will decrease their use of big energy - a big win for consumers. Germany has set the right model in place. Visit there and you see solar panels everywhere. We should have a goal of solar panels on every south facing roof in the state by the end of 2010. Imagine the jobs this type of a project would generate. The state is in trouble and need to stop the out-migration and create in-migration by creating jobs. Installing existing solar panels at the pace require to meet a 2010 end of year goal would be a bold action -but bold action is just what Michigan needs right now.

Board ups

Rate this idea:   1 out of 5 2 out of 5 3 out of 5 4 out of 5 5 out of 5 Current Rating: 3.0 (199 votes cast)

Simple idea to improve communities: We can't control the amount of boarded up structures poping up in our neigborhoods but we can make them look better. Require the "boards" painted to the color of the building's exterior base color. At least the boards might blend in better and be less of a eyesore for the rest of the community. Boarding up buildings is likely to be a growing problem in Michigan for the forseeable future -- let's deal with it in a positive way. Raw plywood is ugly!
