Michigan is one of the hardest hit when it comes to auto insurance premiums due to the amount of uninsured drivers we have. There needs to be a data bank set up, that is updated instantly, for uninsured autos. When a vehicle no longer has insurance, a private company should be contracted by the Secretary of State to confiscate the plate from the car. The fee should be set at $100.00, half going to the state and the other to the contracted company. Simply print out a list and pass it on to the company. A ten minute process. Of course this fee should be paid by the driver to renew his/her license and plates! Easy money for the state and lower rates for us! It is so easy to get insurance for 2 months, cancel it and renew shortly before you renew your tabs the following year! Ten months - no insurance!! Think of all the uninsured drivers causing accidents, driving drunk and even killing people. This would be reduced drastically or at least these suffering people would be compensated! We have to sign for our license, which already includes responsibilities for licensed drivers. I know some people are struggling, but that does not excuse breaking the law. Maybe a break in registration fees according to income? A simple copy of the tax return will be proof of income. After all, the state would be cashing in on the repossessed plates! Help those who need the help, and not force them to break the law and make others who pay their insurance suffer! Imagine $50.00 for every uninsured vehicle on the road! The state would not have to hire a single employee and still make money! Free money for the state! Even if they used 40 dollars to help others and ten towards our huge budget. It should be a felony to drive with no insurance! You can write a bad check for something which costs the same as your insurance and be charged with a felony!
Just an idea to make money and keep the streets a bit safer....while creating more jobs!
