Michigan colleges are some of the best in the world, not only our state. Our colleges have all become prohibitively expensive, especially for working adults looking to improve their education. I would propose that by doing community service on the beaches, roadways, college campuses or waterways (among any other places we can find that need work)citizens could earn 'credit' to be used for continuing education or to work on an advanced degree in their field. These community service ideas could include community gardens, public beach and highway cleanups, soil conservation and testing, trail grooming, etc. It could also include sharing skills, such as teaching a group of senior citizens to use the internet or a group of school children to read. This could be administered very easily by partnerships between schools, municipalities, the DNR and the colleges and universities of this great state. I would propose one central clearinghouse for approved community service venues - with a chance to propose new ideas as they are needed - and a direct connection by internet to see how many hours of credit that you would need to earn by that particular community service endeavor to take a class at a local community or 4 year college or university.
