Look no further than the Bay City Intermediate School District

The Tennessee-based Dolly Parton foundation will send a book a month to all children 0 - 5 years within a given area, for a very modest fee. This program has the potential to wipe-out illiteracy within the span of a generation. The Bay Area ISD has implemented this program with the help of local foundations and donors. There has to be a group of donors or foundations who could rally to get this program going on a statewide basis. The potential savings to all of us are all of the social costs of illiteracy!

Investing in Entrepreneurism

If you Google the top Entrepreneurial Colleges and Universities, only a couple are in the midwest (Penn and I.U.-Bloomington), and the #1 is a small college in Boston called Babson. There, the students actually run a business while they are attending school, and are required to start a business as part of their curriculum. My feeling -- based on my undergrad and grad school experience in Michigan, and interviewing scads of graduates -- is that our colleges and universities teach us to go work for someone else (finance, accounting, marketing, etc.) rather than teaching us to start, grow and run our own businesses. I'm anticipating sending all three of my children to Babson, as I cannot find anything comparable in Michigan. It wouldn't be difficult for our in-state C&U to model Babson. And, what if these 300-plus annual graduates started businesses in Michigan? Talk about an incubator!

Get rid of the governor

Get rid of Gramhole and get someone in there that can and know how to run and bring in a profit. You need someone who can run a company and a salesman that can recuit companies to Michigan. It just take someone that knows you cut taxes and companies will come, then darn if people wont be paying income tax and then there will be more money in the system. Simple economics. The State of Michigan also has a different department for each type of tax. Why is it the federal govt can have it all on one web site and Michigan has one for each area. One for unemployment, one for state income tax, one for sales tax, one for mbt? if a accountant can figure out all the taxes then why does it take so many different departments to figure this out. you need less chiefs and more indians! get rid of each director for each of these departments make it one CEO of taxes and have the workers If I can figure out all the taxes I dontunderstand why its broken up so much. It s just cost the state more Cut the big heads and hire more small heads real simple.

Movie Industry Gamble

My idea is to gamble on the success of the movie industry that is going strongly in Michigan. Many people have suggested lowering the tax credits now offered to filmmakers shooting in Michigan. Since we have attracted many films now being shot due to these overly generous tax credits, why not get a percentage of the boxoffice for each film shot here? All would benefit (filmmakers & Michiganders) from a successful product.

Tax Structure

Instituting the fair tax would completely revolutionize the business environment here. With the elimination of property, business, income, etc.taxes, this state would become a huge welcome mat for business throughout the nation. How simple is that?
