If you Google the top Entrepreneurial Colleges and Universities, only a couple are in the midwest (Penn and I.U.-Bloomington), and the #1 is a small college in Boston called Babson. There, the students actually run a business while they are attending school, and are required to start a business as part of their curriculum.
My feeling -- based on my undergrad and grad school experience in Michigan, and interviewing scads of graduates -- is that our colleges and universities teach us to go work for someone else (finance, accounting, marketing, etc.) rather than teaching us to start, grow and run our own businesses. I'm anticipating sending all three of my children to Babson, as I cannot find anything comparable in Michigan.
It wouldn't be difficult for our in-state C&U to model Babson. And, what if these 300-plus annual graduates started businesses in Michigan? Talk about an incubator!
