Get monies through a non-profit organization to hire more nurse instructors @ community colleges across our state. By so doing, A.The long waiting line of would-be nurses could be eliminated; B.Increase of good paying jobs-instructors & nurses; C.Nurse students would go to school for free as long as they kept up their grades & desire for nursing via meetings with counselors & nurse graduates would be required to work their 1st 5 years in Michigan Medical Facilities(hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices, nursing homes, etc.); D.Shortage of nurses in these facilities could be eliminated. E.Nurses would not be required to do 10 people's jobs while getting paid to do one job. F.Nurses & doctors would be under less pressure so there would be fewer mistakes & they would be more apt to deliver care for patients in an amiable comforting way instead of a crabby, stressed out, exhausted style;G.Increase nurse-patient ratio in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, etc.

Stop subsidizing College Graduates to leave the State

If the Michigan Promise grant is funded I believe there should be a 2 year requirement to stay in Michigan to work. If you leave it becomes a repayable loan. I think it could be tied to a tax credit for Michigan employers to hire college graduates from the state. We spend a lot of general funds on individuals who leave our great state and do not give back.

Turn a Section of Detroit Into a Military Training Base

The military personel brought in to train there would give a shot in the arm to the Detroit economy. The city could be geographically right-sized for its current population. Troops would get a excellent, realistic base to simulate combat training in an urban enviroment. It would be a win-win.

Volunteering

Similar to a previous post I read where the writer recommended those who receive public assistance should be required to serve on a jury. Instead of a jury, why not making it much more simple and accessible to all? I believe those who receive public assistance should be required to perform a certain number of volunteering and/or community service hours each week. During this economic crisis where the number of individuals receiving public assistance is rising dramatically we could turn this negative into a positive. The communities could be cleaned up and more attractive for business or individuals as well as helping out numerous other organizations in dire need of volunteers. If we all work together in helping out this could create a community bond where we all feel like this is "our" town or city and create a sense of pride in what we contribute to. The hour(s) requirement would not be extensive and allow for plenty of time for individuals to search for jobs and get themselves back on their feet. Not to mention, when individuals work together while volunteering a job may present itself in this situation. Networking is the biggest key to finding a job and what better way to network than helping out in the community?

1.Require every elected official to create a personal wellness plan at MichiganStepsUp.org. Each official should keep their constituents updated via email, website(daily updates), or letter on the steps he/she is taking on a daily basis to live a healthier lifestyle, ie "I climbed the steps at the capital building 10 times today". 2.Have every legislator weigh in--publicly. Record BMI's. Have contest between Dems and Republicans on who can lose the most wieght or decrease their BMI. 3. #1 and #2 will have trickle down effect on Michigan Residents. 4. Require any person receiving public aid of any kind, whether it be food stamps, Medicaid, unemployment, to also create a wellness plan with MichiganStepsUp.org. 5. With renewal of one's driver's license, require a wellness plan through MichiganStepsUp.org. 6. MichiganStepsUp.org is a great tool that we've all paid for and should be utilized. 7. Everyone should be required to go to MyPyramid.gov 8. With an emphasis on INDIVIDUAL health, we will draw more businesses to the state. More jobs. More tax base.
