People live near where they work. Many young people leaving the state would love to stay in Michigan, but there are no good jobs. Let's create incentives for businesses to move to Michigan. We can be the new Delaware! Michigan should lower business taxes substantially but increase the sales tax. People will be willing to pay the increased sales tax if they have a good job. Large parks, good education, and walking downtowns are great, but they aren't the reason people choose a community. Michigan needs jobs.

Michigan does not buy their snow plows from Michigan. Our state government buys them from New York. I have heard that Michigan snowplow dealers haven't even been given the opportunity to bid on them. Boss Snow Plows are even made in the U.P.. Our representatives should have pressure put on them to explain this.

Tax credits for outdoor products

I figure any product that will get families outdoors away from in front of a t.v. is a good one. Why not give a 30% tax credit on the purchase of any new Kayak, Canoe, or bicycle, hiking packs, or any product that promotes getting outside and being active.

I did a lot of traveling by car this summer and one thing I noticed about other states is that they market themselves much more. I think we need to follow their lead, since we have so much to offer. Examples from other states: Every state I traveled through had travel information at ALL the rest areas --free maps, guides that told about the state and what to do and where to go - some even employed people who worked the information desk at least part of the time. Most cities had their own local maps of the city, area or region --these were free at hotels, restaurants, businesses, malls --and were sponsored by local businesses by advertisements. I know that we shopped, dined, and found entertainment from these maps at least half the time.

Crime

Clean up crime in Detroit. It will probably be easier than its seems at first. Criminals are only a small percentage of the overall population of a given area, but they tend to represent the area to the rest of the world. NYC was able to clean up its crime, thanks in large part to Rudi Guiliani. We need someone like him here in Detroit. No matter how nice and pretty the landscape is made in Detroit, no one will want to live there except the criminals if the crime is not cleaned up. As far as the rest of the country is concerned, Detroit is Michigan and Michigan is Detroit.
