high speed rail

Whenever I've gone to Europe, I've always been impressed with the rail system. France's TGV train travels up to 200 mph. When I return to the U.S. and ride the amtrak, it's like stepping back in time. High speed trains could really connect cities such as Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Detroit giving travelers other options. A choice between a car and a train is much more enticing than a choice between a Ford and a Toyota.

Minimizing Urban Blight

We CAN minimize urban blight if we require businesses to put a remodeling deposit down when they erect new buildings or take over properties. The funds would stay in an interest-bearing account that could be accessed by new businesses to remodel existing abandoned structures, instead of building new. This would preserve existing green space, reduce abandoned properties, and provide incentives for entreprenuers to stay in established business districts.

Innovation Grants to Our Colleges and Universities

Michigan should provide grants to its colleges and universities for developing ideas for solving Michigan's problems. Let's take problem-solving out of the hands of politicans with a partisan axe to grind and let our students flex their creative brains in recommending solutions.

Change color of lane markings in snow-prone areas

Could we conside changing the color of lane markings in snow-prone areas from white (which is impossible to see in blowing snow) to a neon color that is reflective at night and easier to see in snow? It could save a few lives and make driving in the north country a little safer.

Four Day School Week

Encourage Michigan school districts to move to a four day school week for students, with longer hours each day. This would be more economical for school districts, and allow staff to use the 5th day for professional development once each month. Students and staff (including bus drivers and support staff) would have a 3 day weekend for enjoying the State of Michigan's resources, babysitting, travel, family time, or even to work a second job. There are districts in the State that have already moved to this schedule and support this savings idea.
